  • The REAL New Year actually coincides with the spring equinox

December 31 is formally recognized worldwide as New Year’s Eve. Each year, tourists from all across the earth gather in New York’s Times Square to watch the ball drop, as part of an annual tradition to ring in the New Year. But what if I told you that January 1 is not the true beginning of the new year? And that in fact, it is a holiday that pays homage to the pagan god, Janus. The god of beginning and ending.

Despite that being the case, I still observe January 1 as being the beginning of a new year. That is of course, the new year of international trade relations and digital currency, but not the universal new year. I only observe, not celebrate, and only because that is when they program all the computers to reset.

The universal new year actually coincides with the spring equinox. In 2024, that will be 2 days from now on March 19. It usually falls on the 22nd, but it is coming a bit early this year. Probably because it is a leap year. Does it make any sense for the new year to take place in the dead of winter, or at the beginning of spring when the earth is being reinvigorated with new life and hope? If for no other reason, it is the agricultural new year, a time for sowing.

The Roman calendar came pretty close to starting each new year on the spring equinox. The main difference is that their new year started on the first of the month, versus coinciding with the actual spring equinox. This was done for agricultural purposes, as the spring equinox was for sowing, and the autumn equinox was for harvest. The first change of the new year from spring to winter was the Julian calendar, then later the Gregorian calendar. Which is the one we still use to this day.

This does not make any kind of natural, or seasonal sense. Same as how it does not make any sense for a new day to start at an hour, the name of which is literally shorthand for “middle of the night.” This was only done to pay homage to a pagan deity, and they did not care if they were confusing people, or upsetting their internal settings.

The same is now true where every state except for Arizona, does not care if the switch to daylight savings time is causing insurance premiums to rise due to unnecessary auto collisions. I recommend taking Sunday to sleep it off in the week that we spring forward. It has never affected me, because I always sleep in.

If the world does not care to join you in celebrating universal new year, you can celebrate by yourself, or with a handful of like-minded people. The thing to remember is that New Year is a reset day for your mind, body and soul. And you always want to start the new year off right. On the eve of the spring equinox, fasting is optional. But the day should be spent cleaning, doing laundry, and stocking the shelves of your refrigerator with ingredients to make some of your favorite meals.

You should make any necessary repairs, or maintenance to your car, and around the house in the days leading up to the new year. Change your oil, mow the lawn, wash the car, and change out your wardrobe if necessary. Out with the old, and in with the new. It is bad luck for the stroke of midnight to catch you in a house that isn’t absolutely spotless. This is what they call spring cleaning.

The very next day is the first day of the new year. And you get to start the new year off with a nice, clean slate. Stay home, and make one of your favorite meals. You deserve to relax after all the work you have put in, just to get to that point. Try to clear your mind. Don’t think about anything. There will be plenty of time for that later. The best new year gives you a shower of blessings for the coming year.
